The 1859 Heritage House at The Olives
The Olives is near Yankalilla in the heart of South Australia’s famed Fleurieu Peninsula. It is just one hour by road from Adelaide near the McLaren Vale wine district, Gulf St Vincent fishing, surf beaches, conservation parks, walking trails and the mouth of the mighty Murray River at Goolwa. The Fleurieu is a drawcard for nature lovers and foodies and boasts superior sporting facilities such as The Links golf course at Lady Bay.
The Heritage House accommodates four adults and four children. The kitchen/living area is filled with old world charm, including a 1910 wood-fired stove. It is in full working order, but successful cooking is best informed by experience. We suggest you use the thoroughly modern Ilve stove with its gas cook top and electric oven. (Gas bottles are located under the wisteria at the rear of the patio garden shed.)
The lounge room features 12-ft ceilings, creating a great sense of space, a magnificent fireplace with mirror above, antique chairs and a chaise lounge, a large modern lounge, an antique display case for antique glass and mementoes, a prominent bookcase and a retro Bang and Olufsen sound system (sorry, it won’t stream music, but you are welcome to explore the extensive CD collection.) All free-to-air TV channels are available and a property-wide WiFi allows guests to access their own streaming account.
The spacious main bedroom also features high ceilings, wooden floor, a Queen size bed, ample hanging space and an en suite bathroom.
The second bedroom (known as the Rose Room because it overlooks the rose garden) is small but comfortable for two in a Queen size bed.
A similarly-sized third bedroom is equipped with two double bunks which would accommodate adults, but is designed for children.
At the north-facing rear of the house is an entertaining area with a Weber gas barbecue under a sprawling 50-year old grape vine which provides shade in the summer and allows light through in the winter.
The swimming pool is available to guests
The swimming pool is also available to guests. It is usually too cold to use the pool between April and October.
Also available is the Garden Cottage nestled in an idyllic setting just 30m from the Heritage House but is fully screened by plants. From the Cottage you cannot see the Heritage House or the Black Olive and vice versa. This carefully planned layout gives utmost privacy to those who want to enjoy the garden and wash away the stresses of the city or use it as a base to see and enjoy the attractions of the Fleurieu.
